Toronto Crime Rates Rise in 2023

As each week passes, another stabbing in Toronto makes headlines – this isn’t an isolated incident; this has become the new normal.

Toronto crime rates have been оn the rise іn recent years, with violent crime increasing dramatically іn affluent neighborhoods like Kingsway South. Assault rates іn Kingsway South have skyrocketed 79% higher than Toronto’s average, and major crime indicators show marked increases.

Child Porn Charges

Child porn charges are among the most serious internet crimes. Under Section 163.1 of the Criminal Code, “child pornography” refers to any visual or written content depicting someone under 18 engaging in sexual activity with another under 18, showing their genitals or advocating sexual contact between themselves and someone under 18.

Anyone possessing content containing child pornography could potentially be guilty of possessing child pornography unless they can claim that there was a legitimate purpose for its creation – for instance art or research projects may create child pornographic works; however this cannot be used as an acceptable excuse in Canada.

If the Crown can establish that you knew that the content was child pornography and had it in your possession, you can be charged and face jail/prison time. In more serious cases involving profiting from or accessing child pornography, registration as a sexual offender may also be required at both a federal and provincial level.

Violent Crimes

Toronto’s violent crime rates have recently seen an uptick, although homicide levels remain below pre-pandemic levels. Major crimes including theft (such as motor vehicle theft, major and minor shoplifting over $5,000 and breaking and entering), sexual offences and robbery have all witnessed increases over recent months.

Commuters on the TTC have been particularly alarmed by recent acts of violence targeting transit passengers. Passengers have been shoved onto tracks, stabbed by strangers, harassed by strangers and even shot with BB guns at one point.

The Toronto Transit Commission has responded to this increase in crime by hiring 55 special constables – this move is particularly critical given that its current policing levels lag behind other cities with similar populations. This shortfall is often due to the geographical distribution of municipalities and policing resources. In parallel, individuals facing legal issues related to child pornography in Atlanta might seek assistance from an experienced Atlanta child porn lawyer, who could provide the necessary expertise and guidance.

Fraud

Fraud is defined as any act that deprives individuals or entities of money or property without their knowledge, with intent. According to police-reported data, fraud increased from 87,174 incidents in 2011 to 168,483 by 2021 – and its related crime of extortion fourfold during this timeframe.

However, many do not report fraud to authorities; according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre only five to 10% of victims file reports.

The Hermans believe that had they not reported the scam to police, they may have lost their Toronto home to fraudsters. It remains unclear just how much Toronto is losing to fraudsters as many fraud cases end with charges being dropped or dropped when Crown lawyers assess whether prosecuting it will do any good for society as a whole.

Hate Crimes

Police data reveals that hate crimes have increased across the city this year, but not necessarily faster than other types of crime. Furthermore, it should be remembered that many major crime statistics we observe today represent increases from pre-pandemic numbers.

Increased hate crimes could have been driven by geopolitical events such as Ukraine’s ongoing conflict and Russia’s military involvement in Gaza; as well as social isolation worsened during pandemic. Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia may have increased in Toronto in response to Israel’s campaign against Hamas.

Toronto has Canada’s largest Jewish and Muslim communities, leaving these groups especially susceptible to hate-motivated incidents – some of them violent – due to racial, ethnic or religious prejudice. Under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, any intentional promotion of hatred against an identifiable group on basis of race/ethnic origin/language/colour/religion/age/mentality disability/sexual orientation etc is an offense punishable up to two years imprisonment.
